The Juilliard School Programs
Exceptionally talented Columbia College and Barnard College students are encouraged to seek additional instrumental and voice instruction at The Juilliard School upon passing a competitive audition. Currently, there are two separate programs offered: The Exchange and The Joint Program. It is recommended that students interested in the program complement their exchange instruction with music classes and participation at Barnard however there are no specific course requirements to qualify for admission to either the Exchange or Joint Programs.

The Exchange
Through the Exchange, students gain access to weekly instrumental (classical and jazz) instruction, composition, and vocal instruction with the Juilliard faculty. However, students are not unable to participate in Juilliard ensembles or classes. To be considered for the Exchange, students must complete the formal application and successful auditioning at Juilliard. Annual juries are held at the end of each academic year to determine eligibility to continue in the program. Successful students may participate in the program for up to four years of study and have the option to apply for the Joint Program in their junior year.
Eligibility: Applicants to the exchange may be first-year applicants or current students within Columbia College or Barnard College.
Application: Students interested in this program must submit a Juilliard Application for Admission, including pre-screening materials, by the December 1 deadline.
For more information: Please refer to The Juilliard School.
The Joint Program
Students already in the exchange program can participate in the Joint Program resulting in a Bachelor of Arts from Barnard and a Masters of Music from Juilliard in five years (voice candidates may require six years depending on preparation). Successful students will spend three years primarily at Barnard and two subsequent years primarily at Juilliard while finishing any remaining undergraduate requirements at Barnard. Barnard financial aid will be subject to Juilliard’s financial aid policies hence, students receiving Barnard financial aid will no longer be eligible for aid from Barnard. Students should thus consult with advising to plan accordingly.
Eligibility: Students must have participated in the exchange for a minimum of one year. Students must also have satisfied major requirements within 3 years and completed 94 points of course work at Barnard.
Application: Exchange students must submit the Juilliard application by the December 1 deadline. The pre-screening (if applicable) is waived. Live auditions are held at The Juilliard School in early March.
